Bring Healing; Promote Love

If you are hurt by reckless words, be careful not to fight fire with fire.  Look only a few verses earlier…

A fool shows his annoyance at once [NLT says “is quick-tempered”], but a prudent man overlooks an insult.

So overlook the insult.  Clasp your hand over your mouth before you speak with haste. After all…

Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.

Go off and be alone with God.  Read Scripture and be still.  Rationalize with yourself.  Try putting yourself in the other person’s place.  Realize that it isn’t the end of the world, just a blow to your feelings (and maybe your ego, depending on the insult).

Lastly (but not “leastly”), LOVE.  Pray for love.  Pray that you can love that person who hurt you.  Try to recollect everything you’ve ever loved about that person. And realize that the hasty words against you pale in comparison to your own nasty sin that nailed the Perfect One to a tree.

Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs.

He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.
